Every semester, Cruzes Cruzes will present a large collective exhibition of outsider art artists.
In addition to the names that are already part of the gallery circle, this is an opportunity to promote new artists.
In this first edition of “Deviations and Misplaces”, three artists are shown in the gallery for the first time: Martinho (Ovar), Joaquim Pires (Viana do Castelo) and Niccolò Rossi (Milan). The remaining programmed artists, with whom Cruzes Canhoto has been developing a continuous work, have already had at least one solo exhibition in Cruzes Canhoto or have their work regularly exhibited there.

IDALÉCIO

Idalécio (b.1952) is a portuguese self-taught artist from a small village in Aveiro district.
He started creating spontaneously in the country house where he grew up as an orphan, having no artistic pretensions or interest in revealing the collection he has been accumulating throughout his entire life.
In April 2016, after multiple encounters and conversations, the exhibition “D’Idalécio… Todos Temos Um Pouco” opened at last at the gallery Cruzes Canhoto, in Porto, and his outsider sculptures and paintings could be shown in public for the first time. Still, despite having sold more than 300 art pieces during this operation, Idalécio intended to remain anonymous and continued in the factory where he has always worked, creating only in his spare time. It was not until September 2017, at his second exhibition in Cruzes Canhoto, “Metalúrgico Sexagenário”, that he agreed to reveal himself to the public and to the press.
Pop and populist, surreal and tropicalist, Idalécio is so strongly inspired by the Portuguese folk art as is by some of the expressions of African tribal art, of which he is also a collector. His presence in the interior of Mozambique in the late 1970s serving during the war could be at the basis of this artistic influence.
If at the beginning of his creative activity some stylistic inconsistencies are evident, in the more recent production is perceived a greater cohesion of styles, forms and themes, the result of a successful evolutionary process towards a unique and personal language.

JOÃO ALVES

João Alves (b. 1983, Porto), an absolutely unique artist who denies his academic training in painting, preferring to give rise to his creative multidisciplinarity mainly in the underground art scene, under multiple pseudonyms of which the best known will be the Selva – anagram of Alves.
Throughout 2018 he exhibits in the most diverse spaces, among them the Zé dos Bois gallery in Lisbon and the Cruzes Canhoto gallery in Porto, where he presented the exhibition “Wheel of Fortune”, with great success.

SERAFIM

Serafim is an extreme case of singularity. Nothing in his relationship with the world, including his artistic expression, obeys the expected procedures and predetermined conventions. Since ever, only the different is not indifferent to him.
Diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, he found in the arts a medium where his skills were highlighted, while in all other spaces it were the inadequacies that were emphasized.
His extraordinary qualities lead him to create unusual and surprising associations of forms and colors, not always comprehensible to those who are short-sighted and narrow-minded, but extremely exciting for all those who have awakened senses and an open mind.
Born in Fânzeres, Porto, in 1983, he is an artist with a non-rational expression, always moved by the unconscious in his creations.

MARTINHO

Martinho (b.1970, João Pedro Coutinho) lives in Ovar, where he teaches visual and technological education.
Restless by nature, he soon found comfort for his mental unquietness through his artistic expression. He makes art as therapy, creating in a compulsive and visceral way. Both his paintings and his sculptural objects are marked by an apparent chaotic dissonance that makes perfect sense in the artist’s psychic universe.
He shows his works outside of Ovar for the first time, in this exhibition at Cruzes Canhoto.

ZMB

ZMB (abbreviation for zombie) is a pseudonym of Rui Lourenço, a self-taught artist born in Porto in 1973. He felt the appeal of plastic arts early in his life, but eventually entered the Electronic Engineering course. Especially gifted, he had barely finished the course, when he was admitted as a trainee in a company in the Republic of Ireland, staying there for almost two years until a traumatic event in his personal life led him to return to Portugal.
His artistic expression emerged full-time in the early 2000s as a therapy for the mental disorganization that he went through in this phase of his life, due to serious health problems and lack of valid job opportunities.
With cults and tastes deeply out of tune with the dominant taste, ended up closing in on himself, starting to attend some ateliers of artherapy and exhibiting his works in alternative places of the city of Porto, such as Espaço T, Casa da Horta and A Cadeira de Van Gogh. Parallel to the painting activity, he dedicates himself to writing books and composing music, all involved in a non-conscious process of surrealist expression.
In 2016, he joined the close circle of Cruzes Canhoto gallery’s artists.

JOÃO FRÓIS

Born in 1949 in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), João Fróis came from an Alentejo family based in Mozambique for three generations. In the former Portuguese colony, where he remained until 2001, he did a little of everything, giving meaning to his nonaligned, dilettante and adventurous personality. Among other activities, he was a military man, a journalist, a basketball coach, live model and a flight attendant for the Mozambique Airlines. During his free time, he drew and painted, taking advantage of the close relationship he maintained in the local bohemian and artistic scene, which included Malangatana and Chichorro.
He currently lives in Ponte de Lima, completely out of the system, in a kind of isolation that allows him to take his days as he likes, free and detached from material questions.
Self-taught, he makes art as a result of a singular unconscious process of self-therapy, not a regular activity of creative expression with the conscious purpose of showing and sharing one’s result.

PEDRO D’OLIVEIRA

Pedro D’Oliveira, born in Anadia in 1971, is a singular plastic artist. Despite having a higher education in art and being represented in multiple private and institutional collections, both in Portugal and abroad, he has always kept himself away from the established art scene.
Mostly figurative, his works refer obsessively to a children’s imaginary marked by the dualism of good and evil, all expressed in a genuinely naïve way, through multiple plastic forms.

JOAQUIM PIRES

Born in 1952, he dedicated four decades of his life to cod fishing, before taking up his time with his unusual artistic creations.
Self-taught, with a naïf style, he recovers material from the trash that transforms into beings or objects of bizarre aspect. In most situations, it is the original forms of the materials that he collects that suggest the idea for each of the sculptures he creates.
In the studio house, in Viana do Castelo, where he lives and works, there is no space left to accommodate all the pieces created, so he uses them as adornment of the whole surrounding area, including the garden and roof of the house.

MONICA FAVERIO

Monica Faverio (b. 1963, Como, Italy) presents herself as a creative of malleable materials. Specialist graduated in the creation and recovery of stained glass, she studied with some of the best known international masters of this area. Amongst many works and projects, she directed the restoration teams of the stained glass windows of the Monastery of Batalha, Monastery of Alcobaça, Belém Palace (Lisbon).
In July 2018, she presented in Cruzes Canhoto the exhibition “Interstellare”, from which you can see here some pieces.
Objects as space ships as jewelry as art. Cosmic alchemies of urban, maritime and rural space, in fluxes of flexible energies.

EME

Eme (Manuela Moreira, n. 1957, Porto) has been exhibiting in the gallery Cruzes Canhoto since 2016, when she began to create small handmade sculptures in papier-mâché. In these figurative modulations, she adds little hardware components and everyday objects to give them expression, under vibrant full-color backgrounds, or creatively paints them with diverse patterns, in many cases of tribal inspiration. These are flat figures that may represent popular characters or less common beings like robots, skeletons, fakirs, tribal, punks or extra-terrestrials. On the reverse side of most of these pieces can be found semi-fiction stories of the humorous type or social criticism, result of the artist’s daily reflective wanderings around the city.

DAMIÃO VIEIRA

Damião Vieira is that type of person who can be considered a worker of the arts – that is, the true artist. Although self-taught, he always had the privilege of depriving closely with the master painters, given his activity as a graphic arts technician linked to the artistic scene. From them he took advantage of the best of the teachings, without having to submit to the dogmatisms of the academy.
The artistic vein he has felt since the day he was born, in 1964, in Gondomar, in the district of Porto, took him to attend the Escola de Artes Decorativas Soares dos Reis, but circumstances of life never allowed him to enter a college.
From that time until today he has never stopped expressing himself plastically, having exhibited in the most diverse places and situations, following various styles and forms of expression. It was only in the recent years, however, that he gave voice to his intuitions and his natural creativity.

CLARA PROBANZA

Born in 1959 in the Basque Country, Clara Probanza began to shape the material of her dreams after a serious illness had transformed her life and forced her to spend most of her time lying on a sofa.
In order to ease the pain she felt, in 2008, in the company of her sister illustrator, she began to forge what they both called “couch art” and to build a small world of extraordinary strange beings.
The fantastic and colorful universe that populated his mind gained, then, form on paper, through drawings that express the infinite possibilities that the world offers us. In them we can find one-armed characters, heads with a thousand eyes or men with bird legs – abysmal but fun beings who give us life lessons, from a couch in the Basque Country.

NICCOLÒ ROSSI

Niccolò Rossi is a young Italian designer and artist. Last of four brothers, he was born in Monza in 1991. He studied arts, first in Milan, then in Bilbao and finally in Oporto, where he currently lives.
He dedicates himself to ceramic sculpture with an unusual approach, rejecting the decorative and the figurative. The pieces he creates are experimental and minimalist, with a strong subversive and political mark.
