FILIPE CERQUEIRA
Believe us: Filipe Cerqueira (aka Senhor Cerqueira) is going to be a serious case in the outsider art scene, not only in Portugal, but also internationally.
Immersed in a universe of his own, populated by cartoons, almost all from the Looney Tunes (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester, Speedy Gonzales, Coyote and the Road Runner) and from Hanna-Barbera (Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo), Filipe escuses himself from having to coexist with today’s fast-paced digital world, setting himself up in an analog space-time, almost completely discontinued – what he calls defunct, and we old school – when things were still done with passion and dedication, and where stress and superficiality had no place.
Apart from these ‘friends’ who accompany him in daily life, about whom he knows everything, he also knows a lot about the unsung heroes behind these creations: the producers, the filmmakers or the voices of the characters and who dubbed them to portuguese (from Brazil, which he prefers to Portugal’s versions). This symbiosis is so thick, that one does not realize if it is he who enters the world of animation or if it is the cartoons that invade the world of Filipe.
These are not, however, the only interests of Filipe – the extraordinary brilliance of his mind goes through many areas. As he says in one of his paintings, “Hello, I am Filipe Cerqueira, I know a lot about things”.
