CESSERA
Serafim
Born in 1983 in Fânzeres, Porto, Serafim is an artist with a non-rational expression, always moved by the unconscious in his creations. Being an extreme case of singularity, nothing in his relationship with the world, including his artistic expression, obeys the expected procedures and predetermined conventions.
Since ever, he realizes that only the different is not indifferent to him, reason why he reduces his experiences in life to certain hermetic and peripheral spaces of society. Diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, he found in the arts a medium where his exceptional abilities were emphasized, instead of the other environments where the emphasis was almost always given to his disabilities.
His singular skills lead him to create unusual meticulous works, with surprising associations of forms and colors and bizarre narratives, not always comprehensible to those who are short-sighted and narrow-minded, but extremely exciting to all those who have their senses widely awakened.
It is in 2010, in the work “Ourives”, that the figure of Cessera appears for the first time in the imaginary world of Serafim. Seven years later, this figure appears again, this time named, in the drawing “Cessera na Nave” (2017). From then on, this kind of hero of outer space begins to appear recurrently in his works, to the point of being adopted by the artist as an alter ego in his fabulous adventures.
This first solo exhibition shows works from various periods, from the artist’s adolescence to the year 2019, mostly created in artpen or watercolor on paper.
